Senator Emmons & Officer KeelerOn February 10, 2014 the tenth grade world studies students and facilitators had the privilege of hosting Officer Dan Keeler, Community Relations Officer Midland Police Department and Michigan Senator Judy Emmons. Officer Keeler talked about human trafficking in Michigan as well as mid-Michigan. Senator Emmons presented on human trafficking legislation and why Michigan was ranked in the top five in the country in human trafficking.
After the presentations Officer Keeler and Senator Emmons visited and answered questions with students on the topic of how to create an awareness in Michigan, the nation and world toward fighting this growing problem. Senator Emmons said after talking with the students how impressed she was with how informed the students were on the topic at the local, state and world levels. She also invited the tenth grade world studies students to come to the capital and participate when human trafficking legislation is on the docket. After visiting with the students Officer Keeler and Senator Emmons spent 50 minutes talking with Meridian staff about the ever growing problem on human trafficking and what signs to look for in trafficked young adults. Meridian tenth grade World Studies student representatives participated at the State Capitol in the morning.
Senator Judy Emmons invited the Meridian Early College High School tenth grade World Studies Students to attend Human Trafficking Day at the Michigan State Capitol on May 8, 2014. The World Studies student representatives were Courtney Moore, Hayley Pontseele, Devin Boxey, Stryker O'Boyle and instructor Joseph Ribarchik.

LATTICE (LINKING ALL TYPES OF TEACHERS TO INTERNATIONAL CROSS-CULTURAL EDUCATION)
LATTICE is a learning community and international network that cultivates and supports a global perspective in K-12 classrooms through personal and professional development opportunities. It provides international experience by connecting schools to local and international communities and linking internationals to classrooms with visits and emails. It supports international learning so that the children of today can be effective participants in the world of tomorrow.
LATTICE currently has 984 members from 80 countries comprising of K-12 administrators / teachers, MSU faculty / staff, international students / visiting scholars, and community members. LATTICE members meet for monthly presentations, discussions, food, and music with topics ranging from the personal to the global; from “What is home?” to “What is world hunger?” LATTICE initiates dynamic interaction on issues that concern educators throughout the world and strives to advance greater understanding on issues of diversity. It also builds personal relationships by sharing life stories of national and international LATTICE members.
LATTICE's VISION - will promote a safe and dynamic learning community to share ideas, develop personal relationships and explore controversial topics that permit members to gain global understanding and appreciation of similarities and differences within nationalities, cultures, religions, ethnicities, ages, and professional pursuits.
